Award-winning black and white fine art photographer, Clyde Butcher, returns for his 3rd season to the SWFL Museum of History to share his iconic landscapes in this unique exhibition.
Clyde Butcher: Big Cypress Swamp and the Western Everglades, features 40 stunning large-format black & white photographs, highlighting the spectacular beauty of 2,400 square miles of dynamic Florida wetlands. The area is covered with cypress trees, some more than 600 years old. Sixty inches of rain fall in an average year creating a lush wilderness of subtropical flora and fauna.
This exhibit complements his most recent book, 'Big Cypress Swamp and the Western Everglades,' which was done in conjunction with the Elam Stoltzfus film of the same name, that has aired on PBS throughout the country.
Butcher's work explores his personal relationship with the environment: a relationship that has culminated in arresting compositions spanning four decades of composing black & white photographs that delve into untouched wilderness in their stark beauty.
"Wilderness, to me, is a spiritual necessity," notes Butcher on his web site that has made photographing nature, his life's work.
Butcher comments, "For my part, I am reaching out with my exhibit; Big Cypress Swamp: Western Everglades, to begin a new era based on an understanding of humanity's profound connection with nature. My images will be presented to the viewers with the goal of helping them see the beauty and sublime order of the natural world, throughout the Big Cypress Swamp. My hope is to educate and inspire, to let people know our land is a special place, and the way we take care of it determines the future quality of life for our society."
This accomplished photographer has received numerous awards and honors including the highest award the state of Florida can bestow to a private citizen: the Artist Hall of Fame Award. He has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the North American Nature Photography Association and given the honor of being the Humanitarian of the Year for 2005 from International University.
The dramatic collection of images will combine giclees and original silver gelatin photographs that Butcher is so well known for.
